Maintenance of Certified Medical Manager (CMM) Certification
To maintain certification, a Certified Medical Manager must:
- obtain and document 24 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 24 months
- maintain active membership in PAHCOM
- submit documentation and a processing fee of to PAHCOM every two years by the certification expiration date
- adhere to the PAHCOM Code of Professional Ethics.
Failure to satisfy these requirements will result in the loss of certification. To become re-certified you must retake the certification examination.
Certification Expiration Dates and Renewal Schedule
Your certification expiration date will be April 1 or October 1, depending upon your initial examination date. You are required to renew your certification every two years to maintain certification. As long as you keep your contact information up-to-date, you will receive a certification renewal invoice from PAHCOM.
Obtaining Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
CEUs can be obtained by attending local, regional, or national education sessions, courses, seminars, or workshops that provide training/information relevant to the 18 content areas covered on the CMM examination. Educational/training programs are not required to be pre-approved by PAHCOM, but the information provided must be relevant to the daily practice of health care office management.
In general, educational/training sessions offered by recognized, qualified, and credible presenters will offer CEUs. Be sure to keep track of the titles, sponsors, dates, and number of CEUs offered by the programs that you attend in order to be able to complete the application for certification renewal.
The PAHCOM annual conference is an excellent opportunity to earn CEUs and obtain a comprehensive update on critical changes in physician office practice management. Many PAHCOM chapters also offer educational programs and CEUs. Refer to the Professional Development section of the PAHCOM Web site for suggestions of other educational programs that offer CEUs.
CEU credits are not authorized for presentations by video tape, audio tape, CD/ROM interactive programs, or other similar methods. Self study courses, except those specifically approved in advance by PAHCOM, are not authorized for CEU credit.
Calculating and Documenting Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
One CEU is awarded for each hour (in 1/2 hour increments) of actual classroom instruction attended. For example, if a 8-hour seminar includes two 30-minute breaks and a lunch break of 1 1/2 hours, an attendee who spent 5 1/2 hours in the classroom earned 5 ½ CEUs.
In addition, any college course that is relevant to your duties as a Medical Office Manager, which you successfully complete with a grade of "C" or better, can be counted for CEU credit. Three CEUs are awarded for each college credit hours. For example, a six-week college course worth three college credit hours can be converted to nine CEUs.
Each individual Certified Medical Manager is responsible for keeping a record of CEUs earned in preparation for renewal of certification. PAHCOM will provide notice as the certification expiration date approaches. Submission of a renewal fee and documentation of CEUs (program sponsors and titles, dates, and number of CEUs), and continuous membership in PAHCOM, is required to renew certification.
