04/24/2014 - Orlando PAHCOM Chapter Spring Events
On March 20, 2014, the Orlando PAHCOM Chapter’s lunch and learn meeting focused on ICD-10. The featured speaker was AHIMA certified trainer, Yehia Aly from the University of Central Florida’s Regional Extension Center (UCF REC). At the time of the meeting, the Department of Health and Human Services had yet to issue the extension of the ICD-10 deadline. The Board of the Orlando chapter of PAHCOM was encouraging members to prepare for what was to be the October 1, 2014 deadline by providing education and resources. Mr. Aly provided a thorough and informative presentation regarding ICD-10, the main characteristics and how it differs from IC-9. He also reviewed code extensions, placeholders, laterality, V/E codes, injury grouping, and many other specifics and differences which will be found in IC-10. Our membership greatly appreciates Susan Grace, Business Development Coordinator with the UCF REC center for helping us to provide this educational event. Per the CMS.gov website, “With enactment of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014, CMS is examining the implications of the ICD-10 provision and will provide guidance to providers and stakeholders soon. This provision in the statute reads as follows: “The Secretary of Health and Human Services may not, prior to October 1, 2015, adopt ICD-10 code sets as the standard for codes sets under section 1173 (c) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1320d-2 (c)) and section 162.1002 of title 45, Code of Federal Regulations.” Although, the deadline for implementation has been extended to 2015, we encourage managers to utilize the grace period to further prepare for ICD-10. On April 17, 2014 Elizabeth “Lisa” Sanchez, CMM, CMOM, President of the Orlando Chapter of PAHCOM led the educational portion of our meeting with two presentations. The first presentation, “How Effective Are you at Managing your Time?” focused on Management tips, Multitasking Exercises, Productive Happy Hour, and the twelve (12) Most Popular Misconceptions of Time Management. She presented really great tips for healthcare professionals and provided examples, resources, and tools. This entertaining presentation provided ways for attendees to not only gauge their time management but also develop skills to improve. Ms. Sanchez also led the second educational presentation “Ten (10) Ways to Stay on Schedule” which focused on ways managers can help Physicians stay on schedule. The information reviewed and pointers given should help managers build on the time management skills discussed in the first presentation but also provided specific tips for managers to use to encourage Physicians to Stay on Schedule. Concrete methods for healthcare professionals to improve productivity and continue to enhance their managerial and administrative skills. In May 15th 2014, the presentation will be “Get Your Team Fired Up! From Burned Out to Fired Up Employees! Ten Reason you need to be motivated”. If you have yet to come out to an Orlando Chapter of PAHCOM meeting. This would be a great meeting to start. As managers we need to stay motivated not only to motivate our physicians and staff but also ourselves. Come out and network with other healthcare professionals in the Central Florida area, have a great lunch, and add new skills to your managerial arsenal. A special thank you to the Management and Staff of Black Fin restaurant in Maitland, Florida for helping the Board to provide a beautiful venue for our meetings and delicious food to compliment the wonderful educational meetings.
02/24/2014 - Orlando Chapter News
In March, the Orlando PAHCOM Chapter’s lunch and learn meeting will focus on “ICD-10. Is Your Practice Ready? Are You? Part 1 – Six Months and Counting”. October 1st 2014 is the ICD-10 go live date and the Orlando Chapter Board members want to make sure that members and regular attendees are prepared for this industry changing event. If someone is not prepared, then we want to be a resource to help them prepare. We will discuss steps that should be taken from a management perspective to prepare managers, staff, AND physicians. In February the Orlando PAHCOM Chapter hosted two events. The first was an intimate presentation at the Orange County Bar Association on Legal and Regulatory Issues affecting Healthcare Providers and Medical Practices. Legal Monday was held on February 10th 2014. Our featured speakers were trial attorney, Chris Payer of the Payer Law Group and Prithi Daswani CPA PL. Mr. Payer shared his legal insight as well as many enthralling yet cautioning anecdotes with the group. Ms. Daswani, a vibrant speaker, presented and informative piece which delved into accounting issues for medical practices and innovative options which she coined “sexy accounting” for addressing those issues. The second event the Orlando PAHCOM Chapter hosted was the monthly lunch and learn meeting on February 20th 2014. The meeting was held at Maitland’s newest restaurant Black Fin. The meeting featured two educational presentations. The first presentation “Trust Then Verify: Preventing Employee Theft” was delivered by Karen Andersen, , RN, BSN, CRM, LHRM, CPHRM a Licensed Healthcare Risk Management and Insurance Specialist; Bob Adamson, AAI, CIC, CPIA, LUTCF. The managers in attendance were shocked at the employee theft statistics shared during the presentation but also relieved as they were provided with resources to mitigate this in their practices. The second presentation “Ten Ways to Reduce Overhead Costs” was delivered by Yesenia Mosher, Secretary of the Orlando Chapter. Ms. Mosher discussed ten pragmatic ways for practice managers to reduce overhead costs. She emphasized that reducing costs should be a priority for all managers on an ongoing basis. In January 16th 2014, the Orlando PAHCOM Chapter hosted an Expert Panel of local healthcare industry professionals to provide a lively Q&A session. “What Are Your Offices Resolutions for 2014? The educational presentation was delivered by Kathy Normandy, MBA and Vice-President of the Orlando Chapter. Ms. Normandy gave a dynamic presentation on resolutions for healthcare management professionals. The points emphasized by Ms. Normandy can and should be applied by managers in more than just their professional roles. The meeting also featured and expert panel which included Karen Andersen, RN, BSN, CRM, LHRM, CPHRM a Licensed Healthcare Risk Management and Insurance Specialist; Bob Adamson, AAI, CIC, CPIA, LUTCF, Insurance Advisor; Rebeca Morehead, CPCC CHSE, a practice management consultant , and Mikel Ann McLeod-Emerson a staffing specialist.
